Deep sky objects have been my favorite subject from the beginning of my astronomy life.

I have been watching deep sky objects with 2-inch refractor, 4-inch reflector and 12.5-inch reflector (they are all homebuilt.) for more than 30 years. I logged my observations, but I did not make serious observations of them.

After reading "Visual Astronomy of the Deep Sky" by Roger N. Clark, I am interested in making sketches of deep sky obejects for close observation. It is easier now to make sketches than in old days. There are several elements which change the way of observing deep sky objects.

(1) Sky Chart Software
I don't need to draw background stars at the eyepiece. Sky chart software plots them on a paper before observation. I can make an accurate sketch of deep sky object based on the pre-plot sketch sheet and I can save time. I can add or delete stars on the sketch, if necessary.

(2) Digital Scanner and Image Processing Software
Using a digital scanner and an image processing software, I can record my sketches electronically and make positive images. Sketches become looking more realistic.

(3) Good Star Atlases
I made two star atlases for deep sky observation. See "3. Star Atlases and Catalogs."

(4) Wide Field Eyepieces
There are many good wide field eyepieces on the market.

(5) Dobsonian Mount
Dobsonian mount is the best for deep sky obsevation. It delivers transportability and smooth movement.

Enjoy deep sky observation with me!
